The End of an Age

The Sheridan 2012 Illustrationism Grad Show has come and gone. It was a fantastic event, showcasing the work of some very talented people I am honoured to call fellow illustrators, peers, and friends. The past four years have been something of a milestone in my life and I can honestly say they were some of the best years I've ever had. I've met more friends than ever before, met more like-minded people than I thought possible, and garnered more support for my work than I've ever received from anyone else.

I will miss my fellow graduates, these are great people, and I wish them all the best in their endeavours. Take care everyone, it was a great ride.

The Ministry of Truth

This new project is a propaganda piece done for The Ministry of Truth. The Ministries in this assignment take inspiration from those in 1984, but for this assignment we were not supposed to make reference to their true intentions.

Essentially, the idea was to create a piece of art that would show the ministry in a positive light. I'm not sure if I nailed that aspect, but I feel like I created a stern, lawful mood, which might work anyway.

Music is great. Part Three!

This first piece is an EP cover for Skrillex's More Monsters and Sprites. It's an interesting compilation of different remixes though not nearly the same quality as a finished studio album. Whatever the case, the EP is a good start to Skrillex's repertoire. Check out his hit single here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cXDgFwE13g

This second piece is something I did for a personal favourite of mine. Death is one of the greatest metal bands to have lived. Cut short by brain cancer, Chuck Schuldiner is remembered fondly by death metal fans everywhere. The Sound of Perseverance is Death's last album and their ultimate crowning achievement. Absolutely relentless and heavy, this album encapsulates the fundamental aspects of death, progressive, and heavy metal. This album is an absolute must-have for any self-respecting metal fan. February

This piece is an assignment I finished a couple of weeks ago for Sandra's typography class. The idea was to create an image with a calendar aspect, focusing on one specific month. By luck o' the draw, I got February.

There are a few elements at work here. First of all, I'm making use of astrological signs, those being Aquarius and Pisces. Aquarius is defined as a water-pourer, a strong male air sign. Pisces is depicted by twin fish (or in this case, twin streams of fish) and is a water sign. Aquarius' hair is purple to reflect the amethyst, the birthstone of February, and the water pouring out of his jar forms the calendar.

Music is great. (Part 2)

Last week I posted two album covers; one by the French electronic duo, Daft Punk, and one by the epic-sounding Florence + the Machine. This week gets a little different. First up is Canadian-born, Toronto-living, progressive house artist, deadmau5.

deadmau5 is an interesting character. He doesn't like being referred to as a "DJ" which I suppose I can understand. There does seem to be a certain stigma behind guys who just loop one song into another with a consistent bass beat. deadmau5 does quite a lot more than that; he composes his own music rather than appropriating the work of others. I think he's a cool dude and his music is pretty killer. Check out this song from his latest studio album 4 x 4 = 12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnwfTHpnGLY&ob=av2e

And here we have Joe Satriani's Is There Love in Space? I'd like to think so. Joe Satriani is a true guitar virtuoso, having taught the likes of Kirk Hammett and Steve Vai. While a bit of an egotist (hey, who can blame him when he shreds like a mo'fo'?) Joe Satriani's mark on rock guitarists everywhere is undeniable. That being said, that much talent should not have bad cover art. Is There Love in Space? has bad cover art.
Hopefully mine is a step up. Anyway, check out this madman shred, it'll blow your mind and melt your face. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_caMBFXISiE

Music is great.

This here is an album cover for a band I really dig! Daft Punk has definitely made its mark as a driving force for electronic and house music. They also wear kick-ass robot costumes and are French. Stay tuned for the animated version of this album cover, it'll be up in a month.

Over here, we've got Florence + the Machine's (fairly) new album: Ceremonials. If you haven't given Florence Welch a listen, you're missing out. This girl has got pipes and she belts it out like the best of 'em. If you don't want to take my word for it, check out this awesome performance of the first track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpVWp73A-C4&feature=fvwrel

It's good stuff, trust me.

So, more album covers will be updated next week! Look out for the mystical workings of deadmau5 and Joe Satriani! Peace!

Tenderness and Wrath

The first thing I'd like to update here is the tale of my wandering cowboy. In this week's episode, our hero deals with some personal issues!

Also, what happens if you bottle up all that rage? You get wrapped up in text fire. Dangerous stuff, that. This is my first piece of seven based on the Seven Deadly Sins. The following image represents Wrath.
